Agriculture

OFSDAT is calling for public sector interventions and donation throughout the staples value chain—in research and development, infrastructure, extension and marketing.

Mobirise

Despite its importance to economic growth and poverty reduction, agriculture remains a neglected sector in Africa.

Food crops are still the basis for the badly needed green revolution in Africa because of the large share of food that is imported; the fact that poorer farmers are more likely to produce staple crops; and, that low profit margins discourage the private sector from investing to develop the value chains in this sector the way that they do for vegetables, fruits, or sesame, for example.

OFSDAT helps farmers improve production and make the most of their land. We help rural communities make a decent living from farming, while protecting the environment for years to come.

Building on over 30 years’ experience of working with African farmers, OFSDAT focuses on unleashing the productive power of Africa’s smallholder farmers, who manage 80% of the continent’s farmland.

Working with farmers growing crops, keeping livestock and managing fisheries, OFSDAT helps farmers make the most of their land. We share our expertise in growing the most appropriate and profitable crops.

We help farmers prevent pests and act as a bridge with suppliers: we ensure farmers gain access to the high-quality seed and fertilisers they need, warehouses to store their crops and the vaccines that will protect their animals.

One good harvest is not enough. We take a long-term view to help farmers achieve good harvests year after year. We work with them to better manage their resources, to improve soil quality, to conserve water and to better protect grazing land.

Increasing yields is only half the equation when it comes to increasing farmers’ incomes. We help them secure higher prices by working with other farmers to aggregate crops and sell them in bulk, and by marketing their produce better.

Climate change is an additional challenge to effective farming in Africa. We help farmers prepare. We work with them to plan for the long term, especially for climate shocks, like flooding or drought.

CROPS

Mobirise

Eighty per cent of rural African people depend on small family plots for their livelihood. Most farmers have less than one hectare of land and struggle to grow enough food to survive.

OFSDAT brings in simple but effective technologies, such as:

• Small-Scale Irrigation Schemes
• Seeds for drought-tolerant crops
• Disease-resistant native crops.
• Farming the future

We prove that good farming, backed by strong marketing of produce, is a lasting way out of poverty for millions of rural Africans.
In programmes around eastern Africa, we help smallholders:

• Adapt to the changing climate
• Practice sustainable agriculture
• Manage natural resources effectively.

With training from our staff in eastern Africa, farmers are doubling and tripling their harvests as they adopt better seeds, methods and soil improvers.

LIVESTOCK

Mobirise

Animals are generally a family’s most valuable asset, providing dairy products to sell, pulling power for farm ploughs and transport for the family. Many of the continent’s poorest farmers earn their livings by selling livestock and animal products.

Yet while this is very traditional way of life, there are also new opportunities for farmers to make money. But livestock farmers face huge challenges in taking advantage of these opportunities – they have no technical advice, limited access to markets and lack the high quality feed and vaccines needed to keep their animals healthy.

OFSDAT gives farmers the advice and the products they need through training sessions, farming cooperatives and supporting Community Animal Health Workers. Because when they have the right support, pastoralists can increase their incomes and work their way out of poverty.

We’ve put together a few inspiring stories from livestock farmers who have turned their animals into thriving businesses, and whose lives have been transformed.

With your support, we can help even more livestock farmers build a more prosperous future!

FISHERY

Mobirise

Demand for fish in Africa is increasing rapidly due to population growth, rising disposable incomes and increased awareness about the nutritional benefits of fish. But Africa’s wild fisheries are struggling to meet demand.

Africa aquaculture industry has the potential to fill the existing supply gap and spur socio-economic development by increasing employment opportunities and boosting incomes for fish farmers.

OFSDAT has being promoting the adoption of aquaculture best practices for improved production, as well as strengthening market systems and the policy environment so that farmers can turn their ponds into profitable enterprises.

OUR AIM IN FISH FARMING

OFSDAT aims to build a resilient and inclusive aquaculture environment that will promote economic justice for smallholder farmers across Africa. This will be done through knowledge sharing in market systems, business development and finance, as well as lobbying for enabling policies that will help farmers to build successful businesses by capitalising on the rising demand for fish.

We provide strong backing and stimulus for this new industry, which offers a sustainable protein source for hungry people and a sustainable business that benefits the environment.

Donate today and help more families turn their agricultuer into thriving businesses.
